Today I made these super easy bulletin boards for my new studio/sewing room to be ...... eventually! They are planned to be used to hold inspiration, patterns, reminders to myself etc. My daughter was home for a visit so she was my "personal assistant" and we made them all in about an hour! They are made from circular cork trivets available at the dollar store. You can easily insert push pins into them to use in any room in the house. I used mostly batiks to cover them with vivid saturation because I plan on having a very happy and colourful studio. I think that these would also be awesome in a baby's room in baby friendly colours, in your kitchen as a recipe/message board, in a teenage bedroom and child's playroom etc. I'm sure you can picture the versatility of this project! I will share with you how I made them below: What you will need: Cork trivets ( 7" diameter and approx. 1/4" thick) - As many as you think you need Fabric in colours that inspire you A hot glue gun and glue sticks How to make them: 1. Iron your fabric to get all wrinkles out ( you can use the recipe from my Jan 11 blog post to make spray starch!) 2. Lay your trivet onto the wrong side of the fabric and cut around it leaving about 1 and 1/2" of excess fabric to upholster your cork 3. Fire up that glue gun! 4. Wrap the fabric to the back of your trivet while placing glue very close to the edge, run a bead of glue about 2" at a time and wrap your fabric firmly to avoid wrinkles, a "personal assistant" is also helpful at this stage 5. Once you have glued and upholstered the entire circle, you can trim away the excess fabric on the back of the bulletin board 6. Attach a hanging loop with wool or thick thread to the back (suggested) and hang on a small nail in your space! Voila you have beautiful and easy bulletin boards! I hope you will try this and add some new colour to your home.
Happy Tuesday! Natural Liquid Spray Starch When I ran across this recipe for making homemade liquid starch I was happy because at times when I am quilting I just need to starch! It is also great for those who use an iron to sew clothing!! I laugh at this because , I tell my husband that the iron is just for quilting!! Not only does using starch make ironing easier, it also gives fabric a flat, crispness that assists in accuracy with piecing and makes your clothing look very neat. Starching your clothes when ironing also helps to preserve your clothes as the dirt sticks to the starch and not the fabric. This homemade liquid starch recipe is quick, easy and dirt cheap. It’s also safe and non-toxic as opposed to commercial starches that can contain formaldehyde. Also important, if you are making your own, you are saving on commercial packaging and avoiding the deposit to our landfills. What You’ll Need: 1 Tbs. cornstarch 1/4 cup cold water 3 3/4 cup tap water 2-3 drops of fragrant essential oil or lemon juice (optional) How to Make It: Bring 3 3/4 cup tap water to a rolling boil. While waiting for water to boil, mix the tablespoon of cornstarch into cold water. Stir constantly until cornstarch is completely dissolved. Once water boils, slowly stir in cornstarch mixture. If using essential oil or lemon juice, add to mixture and continue to stir for one minute. Remove from heat and let cool. After cooling add to a one quart spray bottle or more small bottles. Don't forget to label it!! Natural Liquid Spray Starch Happy Monday Everyone

I was looking at Calendars.com and came across the above Journal and think it would be a great way for quilters and sewers alike to keep track of their accomplishments this year. Can you picture yourself using this? I sure can picture it! Happy Thursday, I hope your week is progressing nicely! Every Wednesday I will show you the blocks I am completing weekly from The New Hexagon book by Katja Marek and That Patchwork Place. I love to English Paper Piece (EPP) and this book is about 52 Hexagon blocks. As there are 52 weeks in a year, this year I will be completing one a week and showing them Wednesdays on this blog. Starting today!! See this weeks block below. If you would like to Quilt Along I encourage you to purchase this book here. It's 20% off right now at Connecting Threads ! It's currently at $21.59 USD (retails for $26.99 USD). I cannot give you the patterns as they are Copyrighted. But what I can do is.....offer a free give away of one of my patterns (of your choice free) along with 2 free fat quarters of my hand dyed fabric. To be sent to you at the end of 2016. That is if you join our NEW HEXAGON QUILT ALONG! All you have to do: You must show us: 1) You have purchased this book (keep your receipt) and ....2) You have completed all 52 blocks by December 31, 2016. You will need to send me photos of all your blocks and a scan/photocopy of your receipt at the end of the challenge! Please advise by Jan 31, 2016 by email if you are taking on this challenge. (we are giving you time to think about it, but think fast you will need to catch up by then!) Also, please indicate in the email if you are comfortable with www.quiltingintheloft.com sharing photos of your blocks on this blog platform. We would love to share our readers progress on this project as we Quilt Along! Email us at rlbogaert@gmail.com or use our contact page. Also if you decide to join, I can give you technique advice or answer your questions and give you colour suggestions along the way and I am happy to do so. About this The New Hexagon book: This book is 96 pages and has all the clear patterns in it that can be personally copied to card stock and then EPP'd. The book is beautifully written explaining tools and equipment, EPP techniques, quilt making basics and working with patterns. There are 52 block patterns (each named with a woman's name) with photographs, 7 projects, patterns and labels and a gallery of quilts. There are both modern and traditional colour options and layouts shown in the book. The patterns can also be reduced or enlarged as you wish!! The author Katja Marek explains both her fussy piecing and glue baste method (I chose to do it the hand sewing way). I am experienced at English Paper piecing but this is manageable even for the beginner! At the end you will have enough blocks to compose a quilt. One block can be completed in an evening and it's a great scrap stash buster!! If you have had an urge to try EPP and/or embark upon a pieced hexagon project, this book is for you! English Paper-Piecing (EPP) is a relaxing way to spend time while listening to an audio book, watching TV (especially during cold winter months), waiting for appointments, and traveling in the car. My block for this week is shown below---- #1 "Marie" Email us if you would like to join our Quilt Along at rlbogaert@gmail.com or check back with our blog page each Wednesday to see a new EPP Hexagon block each week.
I hope this quilt along is a great learning experience for everyone and that you enjoy digging in your stash for this one. :) I'm so excited!! Happy Wednesday! Make this easy Infinity scarf in under an hour! A project that is a great way to start the new year. Get something finished that would be great to wear or to stash away as a gift for someone who loves fabric and colour as much as you do! I like the idea of this scarf because I can wear it indoors as apposed to the wooly winter infinity scarves which get a bit warm indoors. It is also "hot flash friendly" or great for all you "Hot Ladies"! LOL! .You will need:
How to make it: 1) Choose 4 fat quarters that you like. Cut down these fat quarters to 17" wide by 20" long, press these. 2) Sew all 4 fat quarters right sides together on the 20" side using a 1/4" seam allowance until you have one long continuous strip. 3) Press all seams open. 4) Fold the whole length of this project in 1/2 on the long side (right sides together), match raw edges, pin seams to match together and sew with a 1/4" seam allowance along the entire long edge. 5) Press seams open once again. 6) Holding onto the open end of the scarf near the seam feed it back through the tube of fabric and pin the seams right sides together and the entire short edge while leaving a 3" opening. 7) Sew a 1/4" seam allowance around the short edges, leaving a 3" opening 8) Turn your tube of fabric through the opening and you will see you have an infinity scarf made with a 3" opening on one seam. 9) Slip stitch the opening closed from the right side with a matching thread. 10) Admire the fruits of your efforts! Wasn't that easy?
Please email me if you have any questions by using our contact page. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, send us pictures of your infinity project by emailing rbogaert@gmail.com, we will be happy to share. Happy Tuesday! Doesn't the above look typical and how it is all crammed into a box? Kind of a symbol to what we all do, take on too much and cram in too much in our lives. Having said that, we all make resolutions and we try to keep them but I do believe it is an important process to put goals on paper. As a list maker myself, I find writing down goals a sure way to get something done. This surely does not mean everything, but it is a good starting point. I will share with you my goals/resolutions for 2016 and encourage you to write down your own as a guideline to accomplishment! My "Guideline to Accomplishment" for 2016! (aka New Years Resolutions)
I sincerely hope that everyone experiences happiness and good health this year and that your creative spirit soars!
Happy Monday |
