Last week I worked on my new pattern "Sew n'Travel Totes" and got to thinking about a DIY zipper pulls and of course I have hexies on my mind all the time! So I came up with this idea and they take about 20 minutes to complete and are super inexpensive. This is what you will need: Thread and needle, a thin hair elastic (cheap ones at the dollar store are ideal), 2 hexi patterns traced onto card stock -1" size, 2 pieces of fabric, an iron, a thin crochet hook, a sewing machine and a bag/tote with a zipper to put it on. How to make it: 1) Cut hexi fabric out 1/4” bigger than card stock all the way around. 2. Fold the fabric around all edges of both fabrics and sew EPP (english paper piecing style), if you don’t know how to do this check out my recent blog post about EPP here 3. You should have 2 EPP hexies 4. Press them but do not remove the paper 5. Remove the basting stitches and press once more 6. Place them wrong sides together with a hair elastic placed between both hexies centred on a flat side 7. Hand slip stitch all around the edges to hold both hexies together and to sandwich the hair elastic in between both hexies. 8. Once all slip stitching is done, place your 1/4” foot on your sewing machine and sew 1/8" all around the hexi, starting before the elastic and ending after the elastic so that you have top stitched all the way around and gone over the elastic twice. 9. Use a thin crochet hook to pull the elastic through the hole in the zipper tab and loop it in place on the zipper tab. 10. Admire your efforts! Can you just imagine the other EPP shapes you could do this with? The possibilities are endless!
Note: This is part 1- there are 2 more easy DIY zipper pulls, come back and visit this blog the next 2 tuesdays. I'm having fun with zipper pulls! Have a great Tuesday!❤️☀️

I know it still looks like a bit of a mess, but you are seeing a window! A total of 3 were installed 2 weeks ago and the drywall is almost completely painted. What are you seeing is the room that will house me long arm because it is a long and slim area. The lighting and flooring of course will change. I am looking at low profile LED (fluorescent) like lighting and commercial grade laminate flooring. What you are seeing is just many subfloors. The stairs have to be built before the subfloor gets finished as we are opening up the ceiling in the main part of the house to accommodate the stairs and it will be part of the floor area in the loft. Make sense? I hope so :)
The stairs will be much less steep, they will be kited so they can curve gently and will have railings for safety and will be build to safety code. It's is all very exciting and to have a professional space will be much more practical. Progress can be a slow beast! I will keep you posted😊 Happy Monday, I hope you have a productive week.🌸 The above picture represents what I have been working on all week.
My new pattern called "Sew n' Travel Totes". I have had these design ideas in my head for months and just had to get them out of my cluttered brain! There is also a reason I am thinking travel because I am going on two significant trips this summer, one to Kansas and one to Nova Scotia and PEI. I am planning to use my new designs for travel because they are very practical and attractive to boot! What I can tell you is the above fabric was used, South Sea Imports, A Quilter's Home Fabric by Nancy's Cupboard, clear vinyl, rick rack and a DIY zipper pull ( FYI: "how to" for the zipper pull will be posted on this blog on Tuesday). There are 6 components to the pattern including 4 sewing totes/organizers geared to travelling! There is also a free sewing embroidery appliqué included in the pattern for the first bunch to purchase it! I am excited to get the pattern in my shop on this website and more importantly for all of you to enjoy my designs and to make all of the totes !! So please stay tuned and keep following my blog, this Sew n'Travel Totes Pattern will be launched very soon.... I really like the look of Nicole with the 3 interlocking stars.
However, she has 24 pieces to her! A little tricky, just because I seemed to wonder with my concentration while laying it out! A wee bit of picking out was needed..... but still very doable. My friend and fellow Hexagon Quilt Along(er) Linda, showed me what she was up to with her blocks and so I am sharing them below:
Aren't they pretty?! Lots of purple, turquoise, pink and green. They look so neat, tidy and pressed nicely too!! (I have yet to press mine)
Thanks Linda for sharing your beautiful work! This is from the book "The New Hexagon" by Katja Marek. Want to purchase it? Click on the image below:

Sale is from May 12 to May 15 so save the date! Up to 50% off top kits and supplies! Happy Birthday Craftsy! 🍰🎂 I experienced a weekend of fun with Mother's Day (family BBQ) and my daughters Graduate Exhibition at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto. ( I will be posting more about this in June when she graduates) So today's "Tuesday Tool or Technique", is inspired by fun and "artful" experiences. The little item above is a Art Collage made with some of my quilting cottons, specifically from my "brights" stash. This is also a very simple craft/art that you could do with your children or grandchildren or a great rainy day activity! Depending on your theme/fabric/colours/shapes and number/size of canvasses, you could make this collage project into great art for any room in your house as well. I have to say I did enjoy doing it. But then I think I am a child at heart! Life is too short to do stuff you don't enjoy doing right? Go ahead and try it and channel your inner artist/child and have fun! What you will need:
How to Make it: 1. Cut out some fabric shapes. 2.Spread a layer of mod podge on your canvas as you go. 3. Randomly place fabric shapes on the canvas and brush more mod podge over them, leaving a little canvas gap between them until you have the canvas filled. 4. After the first layer of mod podge dries, you can coat it with another full coat to seal it and make sure all fabric is glued down. 5. Admire your efforts, you now have some inexpensive modern art to adorn your home! Have a great Tuesday!😊
I just had to share with you the very cute pictures of my little grand niece on her quilt that I made from my own baby quilt pattern "Pick Lots Of Daisies". I know I am very biased, but I think Rilynn makes my quilt design look even better! When I designed this quilt, I also thought of a message that I wanted to free motion quilt onto the centre of it. There is a message included with the pattern that is all about the positive experiences of childhood and my wish for Rilynn. The message says in the last sentence, "pick lots of daisies" .....hence the name for the pattern. Isn't Rilynn adorable sitting on the quilt! Photos courtesy of kellylumleyphotography.com Thank You also to our lovely niece Ashley for sending along these very cute pictures! ❤️
If you are interested in purchasing the pattern, it is available in my "Shop" on the menu above or get it here Have a great week everyone and Happy Monday Listen "May" it is time for the sun to shine!☀️😊 _I am excited to announce that I now have 3 new projects and new classes in Thread Painting. Check out the Shop page to see the new patterns and the Teaching page as well! If you look at the patterns in the shop page hover over the patterns and you can see the thread painting close up! The patterns are available in PDF and hard copy format and ready to order. These 3 patterns all describe in detail how to create free standing thread painted embroidered flowers to add to small quilts. The patterns include detailed instructions, supplies required, a true photo of the flower and a design ready for you to trace and thread paint. These patterns are also available from www.craftsy.com/search?query=quiltingintheloft.com in US$ The workshop demonstrates first hand how thread paint. Depending on your learning style this is a great way to learn.
It's a culmination of a lot of work, but a real labour of love. The flowers are of course a Hibiscus Flower, A Water Lilly (& Lilly pads) and a Gaillardia Flower. Have a great Thursday! |
