Today on Blog Bernina ( the International blog) I am talking about making absorbent, colourful, practical felt coasters & centering fabric circle appliques & drunkards path blocks with the BERNINA Circular Embroidery Attachment #83. It's amazing and a versatile tool for creatives. Check out the blog article here and please feel free to comment or ask questions if you have any at all!

I've made it kind of a rule not to do custom quilts from scratch quilts ie. design to completion. They are so labour intensive! However this next quilt I'm talking about today was a "special circumstance" quilt where I just could not say no. My customer had a Mary Poppins panel and really wanted it made for her granddaughter & felt she 1) did not understand how to convert this small panel into a twin sized quilt and 2) needed someone else to design & make it for personal reasons. So I'll discuss my process first. I got the dimensions of the panel over the phone & found a pic of the panel online and then took the dimensions and plugged it into EQ8 (Electric Quilt 8) Quilt Design Software. The design I came up with is below. You will notice flowers in the borders in black (daisy like) these are to dress up the rather large borders. I also have an excellent quilting pattern in mind. I explained all of this to my customer and she approved of it. Some up close pics of the quilting "Daisies Galore" & appliqued daisies is shown below. The daisies were designed & drawn out, fused with heat-n-bond and zig zag stitched with a small stitch width & length & matching thread. These daisies match the daisies on Mary's dress and create interest in the border. It turned out that while still labour intensive, this quilt was fun to make and the colours speak to me as joyful. The quilting made the borders look almost as if they have a veil of lace daisies, the appliques & the variable binding helped to tie in the colours. I am really happy with the results and hoping my customer will be too!
Enjoy your week! I'm working on an exciting new quilt design today on Electric Quilt 8 . A fantastic design program for quilting. There is so much geometry, math & design ideas to quilting that it really does challenge your mental capacity at times. So, I'll give you a sneak peak of a block and you will probably think "What the heck will that make?" . Believe it or not it will make a very dynamic quilt for a special event in Southwestern Ontario. Do I have your curiosity? Well thats all I can say for now! Stay tuned, I'll be sharing the quilt idea with you soon! Happy Thursday
Recently, I attended my sorority Christmas dinner & it was lovely. We all (9 of us) decided to continue with the tradition of small consumable or practical gifts for each other. The key being small. When you have to buy gifts for8 individuals all at once you will want it to be affordable. I also think this gift idea would make an excellent hostess gift, so here is what I did in photo narrative: My panel had rectangle & square mug rugs on it. I used only the 8" squares & made 8 of them into a mug rug as shown below: I packaged the mug rugs up into goodie bags with hot chocolate packets, hot chocolate bombs & marshmallows. Just an idea but it would make a great hostess gift too for <$5.00 per person. If you see these panels around on your quilt shop trips, don't overlook them. In my book all fabric is beautiful!
I hope you are enjoying the season of giving! 🎄 I had a trunk show this week in person at the Region of York Quilters Guild meeting . Ahhhh it was so much fun to be in person again. Simply sharing to inspire. Photos of some recent long arm quilting finishes for a customer, she loves civil war/traditional quilts & piecing. Her colour arrangements are lovely. I quilted these two quilts on my BERNINA Q20 Long Arm Machine using "Angel Wings" and "Marocco" pantographs & the BERNINA #9 Free Motion Foot. Hand guided edge to edge quilting work with my lazer light. It was a pleasure to work on & see this customers quilts! Have a great wednesday ☀️
In case any of my followers want to know what's going on behind the scenes when there is radio silence from me. Trust me nothing is ever silent in my world! I believe life is for living & pursuing passions. Therefore behind the scenes there is always a behive of creative activity! Just a few minutes ago at 630am I was responding to Bernina Blog comments. Last evening I was working on my Bernina Q20 & a customer quilt. I was also prepping for a Thread Painting Class at Creekbank Sewing this Tuesday and reviewing my new Crumb Pieced Star In a Star Pattern (soon to be available on my website). So yes radio silence is non existent! Some photos of the "Behive" are shown below Oh yes & I forgot to mention, I have a mini tutorial to prep for monday with my tiny sewing group. We are making chicken mittens. Oh darn, I have a demo Monday night I better get on it. But that's after I take in the St Jacobs Market today! Have a great weekend everyone. Stay warm, it's starting to feel like fall! brrr🍁
After a busy summer, I was finally able to complete my Crumb Pieced Star in a Star quilt sample for my newest class. Such a great process to revisit some gorgeous fabric, make new fabric, reuse, recycle, sustainable type scrappy quilting with an organized vision. My kind of scrappy! It's heavily quilted and quilting suggestions are discussed in this class. If you are interested in a class and have a group of 10 or more people, feel free to get in touch to organize a class with me. The math is done for a 18 x 18", 27 x 27" or 55 x 55" quilt. Get in touch with me here & check out my teaching page to see other samples for this class, scroll down to see photos. The pattern in now available on my shop page!
