This is a customer's quilt for Simon, quilted on my Bernina Q20 Long Arm with chicken feet (corners) eggs, wavy lines & feather like texture.  It was fun to quilt and I love all the colours. Simon is a lucky boy and my customer Sue has fantastic taste, I love quilting her quilts!

Twin Needle Ruler Quilting On a Long Arm Machine Say What?!

My blog post about Twin Needle Ruler Quilting that I demo'd at Quilt Canada is posted on the Bernina Blog  here.  Have a read and let me know what you think.  You could also try this technique on a domestic (home) sewing machine.  It was so much fun! Give me some feedback, I would love to hear if you think you'll try it and what you think about this as a creative option for quilting. FYI this is also Quilt #13 on my BERNINA Q20 Longarm Machine!

I'm working quickly on quilts these days to eradicate my backlog.  The quilt below was small but mighty and packed a colourful punch.  With all those colours I felt like I was working on a painters palette and therefore I very much enjoyed working on it with my BERNINA Q20 Long Arm "NINA" she performed well as usual.

Custom Quilt "Mary Poppins"

2/13/2023

I've made it kind of a rule not to do custom quilts from scratch quilts ie. design to completion.  They are so labour intensive! However this next quilt I'm talking about today was  a "special circumstance" quilt where I just could not say no. My customer had a Mary Poppins panel and really wanted it made for her granddaughter & felt she 1) did not understand how to convert this small panel into a twin sized quilt and 2) needed someone else to design & make it for personal reasons.
So I'll discuss my process first.  I got the dimensions of the panel over the phone & found a pic of the panel online and then took the dimensions and plugged it into EQ8 (Electric Quilt 8) Quilt Design Software.  The design I came up with is below.  You will notice flowers in the borders in black (daisy like) these are to dress up the rather large borders.  I also have an excellent quilting pattern in mind. I explained all of this to my customer and she approved of it.

Some up close pics of the quilting "Daisies Galore" & appliqued daisies  is shown below. The daisies were designed & drawn out, fused with heat-n-bond and zig zag stitched with a small stitch width & length & matching thread.  These daisies match the daisies on Mary's dress and create interest in the border.

Mary Poppins Quilt completed. Designed with EQ8, with variable binding, daisy appliques & daisies galore pantograph. This quilt is now a twin sized quilt.I'm sure a little girl will love it!
It turned out that while still labour intensive, this quilt was fun to make and the colours speak to me as joyful.  The quilting made the borders look almost as if they have a veil of lace daisies, the appliques  & the variable binding helped to tie in the colours.  I am really happy with the results and hoping my customer will be too!
Enjoy your week!

Long Arm Quilting This Week

1/19/2023

Behind the scenes I am always working in my studio although the past few weeks I have been tied up with family responsibilities.  My turn around time for custom quilting has  taken a nose dive along  with my blogging.   My intention this week was to get back on track & therefore, I have started this week by working on my BERNINA Q20 Long Arm.

I also have intentions this year of sharing most of what I am doing with the hope to inspire you by communicating via social media & blogging about it.  Although, I have blogged frequently in the past, there is a lot of work that I do not share.  Blogging for me is also a great way to keep track of my work.,much like a scrapbook.  So with that intention written  & communicated out in a public space, I hereby declare that I will share my work and will not be shy about even the most trivial of projects. I am also hereby declaring that  all projects are valid and hopefully you will learn some tips from me?  Let's see !!

Below are recent finishes this to date:

Wild Flower Pantograph/Edge to Edge Quilt Design used
This first quilt design " Bauhaus" was requested by my customer as it is a gift for a man in her life, she thought it looked a little more masculine than some designs.  I chose teal thread to blend with the top fabric & backing allowing the panel like scene fabrics to sing.  The second pattern wildflowers was inspired by the floral patterns on the quilt, I also chose the gold thread to match the backing & blend on top of the quilt.  I wanted that beautiful floral fabric to be the star of the show.  There are many ways to think about quilting designs.   Hopefully, this year I will be able to share more tips for choosing quilt designs.
Happy Thursday!
